Dentistry and Oral Healthcare

When problems with your pet’s oral health arise, we have the skilled team members and equipment to get your canine or feline companion back on track.

Proper oral healthcare is an important part of keeping your pet happy and healthy at any stage in life. Because most pets aren’t able to brush their teeth daily, plaque and tartar build up on their teeth and cause periodontal disease that can affect not only their breath, but also their overall health. At the time of your pet’s annual wellness exam, your veterinarian will do a complete oral examination and may recommend that your pet’s teeth be professionally cleaned in order to remove plaque and tartar buildup underneath the gum line. When recommended, these professional cleanings are imperative in keeping your pet comfortable and healthy for as long as possible.

Signs of gingivitis and periodontal disease include:

  • Bad Breath
  • Drooling
  • Difficulty chewing or eating
  • Gums swollen or red, may bleed
  • Brownish-yellow calculus (tartar) on teeth
  • Receded gums
  • Loose or missing teeth

Our team of doctors and technicians have advanced dental training, which allows us to provide an efficient, effective, and thorough treatment of periodontal disease. At Commonwealth Veterinary Hospital, we take a full set of digital dental radiographs during every dental procedure in order to provide treatment consistent with the current standard of care for veterinary medicine. When problems arise that threaten your pet’s oral health, we are able perform a variety of dental procedures, including:

  • Cleaning, Scaling and Polishing
  • Laser gingival resection
  • Biopsies of masses and other oral lesions
  • Gingival contouring to reduce periodontal pockets
  • Surgical tooth extractions
