Referring Veterinarian Information

Commonwealth Veterinary Hospital in Newton, MA is now offering general surgery services to practices who are unable to meet their current surgery demand.

We know that many practices are frustrated with the wait times at specialty hospitals for non-emergent surgery or are limited in their surgical capacity.  Dr. Wissel and Dr. Lieberman, doctors with advanced training in soft tissue surgery, endoscopy, dentistry and anesthesia, are available for stable soft tissue procedures and dental cases that do not require a boarded specialist.  This started as a pilot program with two local practices and has gone very well, so we are expanding our service to include other area hospitals.

What we can do

  • Brachycephalic surgery with CO2 laser – nares and soft palate
  • Cystotomies
  • Perineal Urethrostomy and Prescrotal Urethrostomy
  • Anal gland sacculectomy
  • Abdominal biopsies (GI, liver, bladder)
  • Cryptorchid neuters and giant dog spays
  • Complicated cutaneous and subcutaneous mass removals
  • Eyelid mass removals and enucleations
  • Toe or tail amputation, Feline limb amputation
  • Upper GI endoscopy or full thickness surgical biopsy
  • Video otoscopy
  • Complicated tooth extractions
  • Gingival mass removal and laser gingival resection
  • Plus more routine procedures if you do not have surgical capacity

What we won’t do

  • Orthopedics
  • Emergency surgeries
  • Laparoscopic Surgery
  • Surgeries that require overnight care or should be done by a boarded surgeon
  • Steal your clients – all referred cases will be coded in our system and we will not take them on as regular clients without your consent.

How Does It Work

  1. Fill out our Referral Veterinarian Form with information about the case you would like to send.
  2. If the case is appropriate for our skill set, we will contact your client to set up a pre-operative consultation (if needed) and give them an estimate.
  3. You do as much of the preoperative workup (exam, labwork, imaging) as you can.
  4. Dr. Wissel or Dr. Lieberman will do an exam prior to the procedure and only perform diagnostics that you have requested or are critically needed.
  5. After surgery, we will send you a report and you will take it from there!
